The College Football Playoff is going to be expanding to 24 teams, and it’s happening soon.
The deal isn’t 100% nailed down yet, but ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday afternoon that the CFP is nearing a deal to expand from 12 to 24, and it would go into effect next year.
This would mean that PSU and everybody’s else’s odds would go up.
Had the 24-team playoff been enacted in 2016, PSU would have made it seven times in the last 10 seasons. But the playoff was at four teams from 2014-2023, and Penn State never made it in that era. In the first year of the 12-team playoff (2024), Penn State made it to the semifinal.
With 24 teams, fans who don’t already expect Penn State to be in the playoff every year will start to.
On3’s Pete Nakos reported that “the opening two rounds of games would be played on home field sites, with the quarterfinals, semifinals and national championship on neutral sites. The eight highest-ranked seeds would receive a bye.
The Power Four conference champions and the top Group of Six conference champion would secure automatic berths. Sources have said the CFP would include 19 at-large bids.
