Former Penn State Assistant Sean Spencer Will Join Duke As Co-Defensive Coordinator

Former Penn State assistant Sean Spencer has been hired to be the new co-defensive coordinator at Duke University. He will be under new head coach Mike Elko, who he coached with at Hofstra for two seasons from 2009-2010. Spencer will be sharing duties with Robb Smith, who previously held the position at Rutgers.

Spencer was known to be referred to as “Coach Chaos” was the defensive line coach for the Nittany Lions from 2014-2019 with the last two seasons serving as an assistant coach before taking the same position with the New York Giants. He also was an assistant under James Franklin at Vanderbilt from 2011-2013.

Spencer was the defensive line coach for two seasons helping players such as Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams become productive players in the middle of the Giants defense. Spencer’s unit was one of the few bright spots on the roster during his time in New York. Giants Head coach Joe Judge was let go by the Giants on Tuesday after posting a record of 10-23 in his two seasons including six consecutive double-digit losses to end the 2021 season.

During his time in Happy Valley, he coached future NFL draftees Carl Nassib, Austin Johnson, Shariff Miller, Anthony Zettel, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Odafe Oweh. Spencer was known as one of the top recruiting assistant coaches in the nation and will hope to bring the same impact to Durham.
