The Penn State men’s basketball team has added Brant Byers, formerly of Miami of Ohio, from the transfer portal.
Byers is from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and attended the Perkiomen School before starting his college basketball career.
The RedHawks gained a lot of national attention this year as they were 31-0 until they lost to UMass in the Mid-American Conference quarterfinals. They were ranked as high as No. 19 in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll.
They still went onto the NCAA March Madness Tournament as an #11 seed and defeated SMU in the First Four Opening Round, 89-79.
Byers is a 6′-8″ guard known for his shooting ability.
He redshirted his first year (2023-24) and then earned MAC Freshman of the Year after the 2024-25 season.
This past year, he averaged 14.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in 34 games played and was Second Team All-MAC.
His overall shooting percentage was 47.8 percent and his 3-point shooting percentage was 39.2.
Penn State men’s basketball needs more consistency from beyond the arc and Byers seems to fit that need.
Byers is the second player Penn State has attained from this year’s portal.
Last Sunday, PSU signed left-handed, crafty, point guard, Jay Rodgers, from Central Connecticut.
