The Nittany Lions looked to go 2-0 in their West Coast road swing as they played Oregon this afternoon in Eugene, but they did not accomplish their mission falling to the Ducks, 83-72.
Both teams started the game a little sluggish trying to find their stride and at the first media timeout (15:29) it was only a 6-4 score in favor of the Ducks. Penn State’s, Freddie Dilione V., had all four of PSU’s points.
After the timeout, Penn State came out with some rhythm and other players were getting involved.
The Nittany Lions went on an 11-2 run with Eli Rice, Kayden Mingo and Melih Tunca all getting in the scoring column. With (12:22) left in the first half, it was the Nittany Lions 15 Ducks 10.
Oregon had to call a timeout.
Then, Dezdrick Lindsay, came out firing after the timeout and made two three-pointers to give the Ducks the lead 16-15 (11:16).
Kayden Mingo, though, had an answer for any Ducks’ score and was 4-of-4 from the field with drives to the hoop (9:18).
With (6:39) left in the first half, it was now Oregon going on a run and taking the lead, 27-23. Oregon’s leading scorer, Nate Bittle, led this run with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and was 2-for-2 from three-point range.
Oregon was shooting 47% from downtown and with (2:49) left in the first half, it was Oregon over Penn State 34-28.
The score at half was Oregon 38 Penn State 32.
Mingo had 11 points for the Blue & White and Bittle for the Ducks was leading all scorers with 12 points.
To start the second half, Penn State came out of the locker room on a 4-0 run to trim the Ducks’ lead to two, but Takai Simpkins answered this mini-run with a three-point make and at the (18:48) mark it was Oregon 41 PSU 36.
The Nittany Lions’, Dominick Stewart, then banged in a three of his own and with (17:37) left in the game it was Oregon over Penn State 44-41.
At the first media timeout of the second half (15:52), it was Penn State inching closer to Oregon, 46-43.
Out of the timeout, Stewart hit his second three of the half to tie the game at 46-46 (15:42).
The Ducks then went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead, 52-46 (14:27).
Mingo stopped the Ducks’ run with a shot from downtown to make the score Oregon 52 PSU 49 (13:34).
At the second media timeout (11:48), it was Oregon hanging onto their lead, 53-49.
The Ducks’, Wei Lin, came off the bench and drilled a three to stretch Oregon’s lead to nine, 58-49 (11:23). Oregon was on a 5-0 run.
Oregon had their largest lead of the game at 11 points, 62-51, at the media timeout with (9:53) left in the game.
Bittle had 18, Simpkins had 15 and Lindsay had 10 points for the Ducks.
Oregon was not letting Penn State make any major run and with (7:33) to play the Ducks kept their lead at 11, 67-56 (7:33).
The Nittany Lions had to put on their full-court press to try to force turnovers, but Oregon was handling the pressure well.
With (4:36) to play it was the Ducks in control, 77-65.
Oregon was shooting 52% from three and had their largest lead of the game at 15, 80-65, with (4:00) to play.
The Nittany Lions would not get any closer than 10 points and the Ducks closed out Penn State with a 83-72 victory.
