University Park— Penn State football coach Matt Campbell is taking in his first PSU wrestling match.
After the second match of the night— where freshman phenom Marcus Blaze, ranked fourth at 133, beat Nebraska’s Jacob Van Dee, ranked No. 10– Campbell was introduced to the Bryce Jordan Center crowd.
He got the predictable applause, and then gave a brief speech.
In that speech, Campbell talked up the wrestling program— which he accurately described as the best in the country— and also promoted No. 5 Penn State hockey’s game against No. 2 Michigan State, which will take place in Beaver Stadium at 1 tomorrow.
Finally, Campbell told the audience “we can’t wait to make each and every one of you so proud of this football program this fall.”
Campbell came to State College after 10 seasons as Iowa State, where he led the program to its most successful period ever— eight winning seasons and two trips to the Big 12 Championship game.
Campbell is in a spot not many people have been in at Penn State. Since 1950, when the program hired Rip Engle to be its head coach, only four people have taken the full time job, with Campbell being the fourth.
Campbell is off to a busy start, landing 36 transfers from the portal and having 13 high school recruits either signed or committed, not to mention having to fill out a coaching staff, too.
Penn State fans will have the chance to hear more from Campbell Wednesday, when he addresses media for the second time since becoming head coach in December.
