A disappointing recruiting day for Penn State got worse when former commit Lavar Keys committed to another Big Ten school.
Keys announced his commitment to Curt Cignetti and Indiana.
It’s a sign of the times in college football.
It would have been unthinkable for a prospect who had been committed to Penn State to de-commit and then go to Indiana, but it happened, and nobody seems surprised by it. That’s because Indiana football is better than it ever was, starting 11-0 this season, and Penn State is in limbo, looking for a new head coach.
The firing of James Franklin is what led Keys and many others across the 2026 and ‘27 classes to look elsewhere.
Keys went into his decision in an interview with Rivals.com.
“Indiana is the best fit,” Keys said. “I love the culture, love how they are winning, and Bloomington is a great place. The fans bring so much intensity.”
“Coach Cignetti has turned things around and made them a new Indiana. He is a great with energy. Coach Cignetti has brought juice to the program.”
“It’s a fun place to be. The fans love the team, it’s electric, and it feels like home. The atmosphere is great and I love the support.”
Earlier in the day, Kevin Brown announced his de-commitment from Penn State. The four-star OL from Harrisburg is expected to commit to West Virginia, given that he’s announcing his commitment on the Pat McAfee show.
Keys is a three-star recruit per 247Sports. He also has offers from schools such as Boston College, Minnesota, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
