Spell is currently ranked the No. 1 running back in the 2027 class and recently spoke about not being 100-percent committed to Penn State following his game on Friday. It comes after a saga which featured him tweeting that he was staying amidst on-going rumors about his recruitment.
The star junior most recently got an offer from Georgia and was planning on making a visit there. He’s already got a visit to Notre Dame scheduled following the latest happenings with Franklin and company.
With his decommitment, there are no longer any committed members of the 2027 class.
Friday night, before Franklin’s firing, Spell said he’s no longer fully committed.
“I’m not 100% with Penn State anymore,” Spell told Keith Barnes of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after scoring six touchdowns in McKeesport’s win over Mars. “I’m not 100% with Penn State anymore. I will be taking visits and everything else, so we’ll see from there.”
Last month,
Three words sent Penn State fans who follow the recruiting side into a frenzy.
”I am staying.”
Spell tweeted them out Sept. 14, responding to a thread regarding his recruitment.
Penn State fans received it so well that one of them blew up the tweet and made it a sign to display on College GameDay.
Spell was there for GameDay and there for Penn State’s White Out showdown with Oregon, which it lost in.
That Oregon game will forever be remembered as the beginning of the end for James Franklin.
