Report: Penn State WR Entering Transfer Portal

Drew Allar looks to hit a crossing Dante Cephas.

It looks like Penn State will be losing one of its receivers to the transfer portal.

Per a report by Pete Nakos of On3Sports, Dante Cephas is entering the transfer portal after one season at Penn State.

Cephas came to Penn State with high expectations.

The in-state product from Penn Hills High School in the Pittsburgh area had a successful four-year career at Kent State, highlighted by the 2021 season in which he picked up 1,240 yards and nine touchdowns on 82 receptions, and was a player many were looking for to provide numbers and experience to a receivers room that was losing its top two performers in Parker Washington and Mitchell Tinsley.

But sometimes, things don’t work out, and that was the case with Cephas at Penn State.

He ended the season with just 246 yards and two touchdowns on 22 catches.

In Penn State’s season-ending 38-25 Peach Bowl loss to Ole Miss this past Saturday, Cephas played zero snaps, and head coach James Franklin was asked about it after the game.

Cephus.

“Everything’s an open competition every week, and the depth chart reflects that,” Franklin said. “Then obviously when you’re in a bowl situation and you’ve got three weeks, there’s a lot of movement that can occur in three weeks. Part of that is having Trey Wallace back that we had not had for about five weeks this year.”

Based on those words, today’s news shouldn’t be a surprise.

Franklin, receivers coach Marques Hagans and co. have a lot of work to do this offseason. Penn State’s receivers room was a big problem, as evident by the fact that KeAndre Lambert-Smith was the only receiver to eclipse 300 yards.
