On Wednesday, Penn State revealed its Homecoming week dates. Penn State will have its annual Homecoming the week of Oct.8-14, 2023, according to the Penn State Homecoming Instagram page.
Penn State will play its annual homecoming game against UMass Oct. 14 at a time yet to be determined.
But it’s assumed that this year’s Homecoming game won’t coincide with Penn State’s annual White Out Game, which was the case this past fall. During Homecoming Week 2022, Penn State beat Minnesota, 45-17, Oct. 22.
Penn State’s 2021 Homecoming game ended up being a nightmare. In one of the most embarrassing losses in school history, Penn State lost to Illinois, 20-18, in nine overtimes as a 24-point favorite. That loss firmly knocked Penn State out of the Big Ten championship race and College Football Playoff picture.
This year’s Homecoming game feels like a game that is practically impossible for Penn State to lose. UMass is 3-37 since 2019 and has been one of the worst programs in FBS Division I. Penn State and UMass have only played once. That was in 2014, James Franklin’s first season as Penn State’s coach. Penn State took care of UMass, 48-7. UMass has been in Division I since 2012, initially part of the Mid-American Conference. Since the end of the 2015 season, the team has been independent.
This year’s Homecoming theme is “Illuminate the Lion Within,” as announced by April Komal, Penn State’s 2023 Homecoming Executive Director.
Komal described the homecoming thing in a statement during Penn State’s THON weekend Saturday:
“Everyone who has had an encounter with Penn State has been touched by the spirit of the lion,” Komal said. “Even though we come from different backgrounds, we are one community, forever a home, united by the lion within.”
