Tre Donaldson scored a career-high 21 points as Michigan (15-5, 7-2) remained perfect at home (10-0) after defeating Penn State (13-8, 3-7) 76-72. Danny Wolf (11 points and nine rebounds) and Nimari Burnett (10 points and four assists) combined for 21 in the win.
Nick Kern Jr. led Penn State with 16 points and Ace Baldwin Jr. contributed 15 points, six assists and three steals. ย D’Marco Dunn scored 13 points in the loss.
Overall, Penn State shot 49% from the field and 47% from 3. Michigan shot 48% from the field and 43% from deep.
Penn State remains winless on the road in the Big Ten (0-5).
Key First-Half Moment: Michigan grabbed an early six-point advantage (17-11), but PSU outrebounded the Wolverines 20-9, including six offensive rebounds that turned into 10 second-chance points. There were seven ties and two lead changes as the game was knotted at 35 by the intermission.
Key Second-Half Moment: Penn State earned a 70-67 lead after going on a 13-3 run, capitalized by Freddie Dilione V’s second 3-pointer of the night. Michigan would rally late, though, as the Wolverines held the Nittany Lions scoreless over the final two minutes, going on a 9-0 run to steal the victory. Donaldson scored seven of the final nine for Michigan.
Turnover Battle:ย Michigan entered Monday night leading the Big Ten with 15 turnovers per game, but the Wolverines won the turnover battle against Penn State 9-18. Those 18 turnovers for Penn State were a season high.
Penn State will return to State College for a game against Ohio State in Rec Hall on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
