The Penn State White Out only happens once a year, and if it happened more than once, it would start to lose its power.
But a College Football Playoff game at Beaver Stadium might be a good reason to have a second White Out.
With the playoff expanding to 12 teams starting this season and first-round games being at on-campus stadiums, there’s now a chance that Penn State could host a postseason game.
That game would instantly because the most important in Beaver Stadium history and something big would need to be done from a marketing standpoint.
But could that big thing be a second White Out?
“It may be a White Out, and we had nothing to do with it being a White Out,” coach James Franklin said jokingly at Big Ten Media Days Wednesday. “It may be a weather White Out.”

“I will say this, something that me and Pat (Kraft) really haven’t talked about up to this point, but we feel very strongly that there should be one White Out a year. We’re able to create some really cool environments with a Stripe Out, a Helmet Stripe, which is very close to a White Out. We’re able to create some really good environments — the throwback [Generations of Greatness] game. I think it’s up for discussion with myself, Pat and others to say, ‘Hey, we only do one White Out a year, but if we would have a home playoff game, is that something to discuss?’”
To have a chance for a playoff White Out, Penn State will have to win. The team’s first chance to do that in 2024 will be Saturday, Aug. 31 against West Virginia in Morgantown.
