A former Penn State wrestling commit is staying in the Big Ten.

A little more than a week after announcing his de-commitment, Mason Gibsonย announced his commitment to Rutgers.

As an eighth grader, Gibson won the Super 32, which is a prestigious national tournament.

From there, Gibson wrestled at Bishop McCourt. His high school career unfortunately wasnโ€™t as successful as it could have been due to injury. He finished state runner-up as a freshman in 2021 but missed his whole sophomore season due to injury. He only wrestled in a handful of matches as a junior and couldnโ€™t compete in the state tournament.

Finally healthy this past season, Gibson went 47-7 and won his second district and regional championships. At states, he made it to the semifinal round where he fell to eventual champion Charlie Robson of Conwell-Egan. Gibson then lost his consolation match to finish in fourth.

Gibson most recently competed at 133 for McCourt and FloWrestling projects him to compete at that class when he starts his college career.

Gibson, whose older brother, Erik, wrapped up his first season at Penn State this past winter, had initially been commitment to Cornell along with his brother. But the two decided to stay in-state and wrestle for the great Cael Sanderson.

Mason Gibson finished his high school career a Bishop McCourt this winter with a 72-10 record.

It remains to be seen whether Gibson will be in the lineup if and when Penn State takes on Rutgers this coming season. But one has to figure heโ€™ll be wrestling a Penn Stater one of these days.
