Penn State Cracks top 10 in Coaches Poll

With training camps opening up all around the country, it’s the beginning of pre-season ranking season.

Up first is the Coaches Poll Top 25 where Penn State comes in at No. 7 which is good enough for third-highest in the Big Ten.

The Nittany Lions finished the 2022-23 campaign at No. 7 in the Coaches Poll as well after their Rose Bowl trouncing of the Pac 12’s Utah.

Georgia got the top spot in the poll accumulating 61 first place votes while Michigan came in at No. 2. Alabama  received four first place votes and came in third while Big Ten foe Ohio State received one first place vote and is fourth. LSU rounds out the top five while future Big Ten opponent USC is No. 6.

Rounding out the top ten is Florida State at No. 8, Clemson at No. 9 and Tennessee at No. 10.

The Big Ten had three teams in the top-10 and four in the top-25 with Wisconsin sitting at No. 21. Iowa, Minnesota, Maryland and Illinois all received votes.

Future Big Ten members Washington and Oregon were also in the top-15 at Nos. 11 and 15 respectively.

The Nittany Lions will play five Big Ten teams this season who garnered votes in the preseason Coaches Poll.

Last year, Penn State didn’t make either preseason top-25 list, before ending the season ranked No. 7 in both the AP and Coaches Poll. The preseason AP Poll will be released at noon on Wednesday.

It’s important to note that ultimately preseason rankings become irrelevant once the season begins.

With the No. 7 ranking, Penn State currently sits at +2500 odds to win the National Championship.
