Devin Royal, a Class of 2023 swingman out of Pickerington, Ohio, had narrowed his school choice down to nine, and Penn State made the list.
Penn State is in the mix along with Alabama, Clemson, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Miami, Ohio State, and Ole Miss for the 6-foot-6, 210-pound Royal, who also plays for the All-Ohio Red AAU team.
Royal is the number two recruit in Ohio, the No. 14 small forward, and the No. 78 player in the nation according to 247Sports Composite rankings. Royal made an official visit to Penn State in March after Penn State was the first Power Five program to offer him a scholarship.
Scouts like his long arms and strong frame. He is a great feel for the game and is a natural scorer. He can play on or off the ball and find open spaces in the defense. He has a solid mid-range game and has a nice touch from three. Scouts don’t think he has elite athleticism, and he may be a tweener forward, however, he has the strength and the length to guard small forwards, power forwards, and even undersized centers at the college level.
On3 Sports currently lists the Nittany Lions as the second favorite to land royal, just behind Michigan State, with a 23.8% chance.
If Royal were to commit to Penn State, coach Shrewsberry would have beaten out three other Big Ten schools for a Top 100 player. He would also join Logan Imes and Braeden Shrewsberry in the Class of 2023.
