UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State running back Carson Hansen reached a significant career milestone Saturday, surpassing 2,000 career rushing yards as the Nittany Lions traveled to Michigan.
The milestone represents another accomplishment for Hansen, who followed head coach Matt Campbell from Iowa State to Penn State during the offseason.
Hansen established himself as a dependable contributor, bringing a physical running style and valuable Big 12 experience to Happy Valley.
During his time with Iowa State, Hansen collected 1,771 career yards during his three seasons in Ames.
Hansen ranks 19th all-time amongst all Cyclone running backs.
His arrival provided Penn State with an experienced option in a backfield undergoing considerable changes following the departures of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen.
Penn State entered Saturday’s matchup looking for answers after struggling to establish its ground game during their three-game losing streak against conference foes.
The Wolverines entered today allowing 94.6 yards per game – good for 14th in the nation.
The Nittany Lions managed just 48 rushing yards against Northwestern, which Hansen was responsible for 19 of them, highlighting the offensive line’s struggles and the difficulty of generating consistent production from a crowded running back rotation.
Campbell has acknowledged the challenge of identifying a clear front-runner in the backfield, emphasizing that practice preparation and game-day execution must determine which running back earns additional opportunities.
Hansen entered today needing two yards and achieved the feat in the first quarter, where Hansen grinded through a Michigan defense for a two-yard gain to reach the 2,000 yard career mark.
As Penn State searches for offensive consistency, Hansen’s experience and physicality could become increasingly important during the remainder of the conference schedule.
