ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Penn State wide receiver Chase Sowell entered Saturday’s matchup against Michigan with questions surrounding his availability. By halftime, he had provided plenty of answers.
Sowell delivered his most productive first half of the season, hauling in six receptions for 74 yards while helping Penn State move the football against the Wolverines.
His performance was particularly impressive considering an injury scare early in the second quarter.
Sowell appeared to injure his lower right leg after making a 13-yard reception. He favored the leg while leaving the field and subsequently entered the injury tent for evaluation.
Penn State’s possession eventually stalled, forcing the Nittany Lions to punt.
Sowell was later spotted testing his leg along the sideline before returning to the injury tent. However, the setback proved temporary as he returned on Penn State’s ensuing possession.
His return was welcome news for quarterback Rocco Becht and an offense that could ill afford another setback at wide receiver.
Sowell emerged as Becht’s most reliable receiving option through the first half against Michigan.
He caught all six of his targets for 74 yards and accounting for 60% of Penn State’s 123 first-half receiving yards.
The last time Sowell had a 100-yard receiving game was as a member of Iowa State last season against Arizona, where Sowell had 146 yards receiving.
