There will not be a consensus No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in Columbus in the first weekend of college football.
The Associated Press (AP) holds Penn State in higher esteem than the Coaches Poll ranking the Nittany Lions as the No. 2 team in its annual Preseason Pool.
This is the first time Penn State has been ranked No. 2 in the AP Preseason Poll and the program’s highest preseason ranking since 1997 when they were No. 1.
Penn State came within five points of Texas of being selected the No. 1 team in the nation.
The SEC (10) has the most teams in the AP Preseason Top 25 with the Big Ten (6) second.
Other than Penn State, Ohio State (No. 3), Oregon (No. 7), Illinois (No. 12), Michigan (No. 14), and Indiana (No. 20) were ranked in the Top 25.
No other media outlet has crowned a national champion longer than the Associated Press having done so since 1936.
In 1950, the AP started its annual Preseason Poll with 11 preseason No. 1 finishing the season ranked by the AP No. 1 last being done by 2017 Alabama.
The only two teams ever to go wire-to-wire in the AP Poll No. 1 were the 1999 Florida State Seminoles and the 2004 USC Trojans.
No. 2 (AP) Penn State opens its season on August 30 in Beaver Stadium against Nevada at 3:30 on CBS.
