Some would call it inevitable. Some would call it a failure on Penn State’s end. But all Penn State fans are disappointed at the news of basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry leaving the program after two seasons for Notre Dame.
Just after Shrewsberry led Penn State to its most magical basketball season decades, he’s moving on, per multiple reports. If the reports are true, he’ll leaves with a 37-31 record highlighted by this past season’s NCAA Tournament appearance, the school’s first since 2011.
Here’s what the people of Twitter had to say.
Penn State basketball just not allowed to have nice things. https://t.co/MEzaCy9m1t

The Fighting Irish get their MAN- MICAH SHREWSBERRY will start a new era for @NDmbb !Sources: Irish finalizing deal to hire Shrewsberry – via @ESPN App. https://t.co/SwsN5wxevH

Micah Shrewsberry had a $4 million buyout and was staring at a significant extension and raise at Penn State that would have more than doubled his salary.
Credit to Notre Dame for not letting money get in the way of landing its top target. https://t.co/UOPLTGFbDm

Was nice having a good basketball program for one season. 😔

Damn… I am sad. I’m afraid PSU basketball is in for a long rebuild 😔 https://t.co/oWpPf8VLVr

I hate Notre Dame so much https://t.co/FjV1fxNfDe

If you’re looking for a spot to place blame, I don’t think it can go to one place. I think this is the result of administrations both past and present not caring about PSU basketball until it was already too late.
I hope at the very least a lesson is learned today.

Because of Micah Shrewsberry and his team (a ton of respect and credit to the players who were here both before and during his time) Penn State Basketball is in a better place now than before his arrival. I’m excited for the future. pic.twitter.com/gI54OQBbgA

Season was fun sure, but part of that fun was the potential improvement for the program and future outlook. We won a couple more games than we did before but now in a worse spot. Cool.

A lot of directions you could go. Adam Fisher provides some immediate continuity and stability – long time spent with Jim Larranaga isn't bad – but probably lacks the replacement splash people would want to see. Assistants like Shrewsberry aren't easy to find but not impossible.

HIRE COACH FISH KEEP THE SUCCESS GOING !!!!!

Some of you are very dug in on this notion. We do not know what PSU countered with.
We do know the bulk of Shrewsberry's life has been tied to the state of Indiana. Also, NIL has been challenging for hoops here. https://t.co/SE8VMIMb1X
— Audrey Snyder (@audsnyder4) March 22, 2023
I almost forgot about driving to Bucknell a dozen years ago to talk to Ed DeChellis about why coaching at Navy was more appealing than Penn State.
This program is not in the same place it was then. There are challenges here for sure, but it's not like it was.
— Audrey Snyder (@audsnyder4) March 22, 2023
Also: Micah Shrewsberry has come and gone without Penn State ever making his contract available
— Audrey Snyder (@audsnyder4) March 22, 2023
Penn State was more than competitive with its offer. Notre Dame has been a looming threat since Brey announced he was leaving. https://t.co/vsC48jFnS8

Alright Penn State, do the right thing and focus all energy, resources, NIL, etc. on PSU football. #WeAre

No other way around it. No matter how much they tried, this was a failure by Kraft & company. https://t.co/cG00gxIqDB

Here’s the bottom line no one will say: PSU has neglected the basketball program since the beginning of time. It’s not a wanted job, it’s not a top 100 job in the country tbh. I’m pissed Shrews left, but PSU only has itself to blame for its lack of action in the past. 🔵⚪️🦁

Micah Shrewsberry left Penn State because there are better jobs out there than Penn State. People will make it more complex than that, but it isn’t.
— Joe Smeltzer (@joesmeltzer775) March 22, 2023
In men's college hoops, ND is a bigger and better job. Yes both schools are 🏈 crazy, almost to basketball's exclusion. But ND just has more panache on the hardwood.
Also, big home factor https://t.co/yqWnUDyRR0
— PJ, Banks Woke (@PhillyBeach93) March 22, 2023
If Penn State invested in the men’s basketball program like a school with its resources could it would be a good job. They’ve made it clear it is below wrestling and even women’s basketball on its list of priorities which is why it was gonna be tough to retain Shrewsberry https://t.co/E2MC56hUJB
— Paul Zeise (@PaulZeise) March 22, 2023
Exactly it sucks but ND basketball is a better job and he is from Indiana!!
— Jameson86 (@moyerm86) March 22, 2023
I don’t think ND is that better of a job to be honest. He’s from Indiana that’s the only thing standing out to me

Feeling fine, Joe. It’s just Penn State basketball. Coach Ed left for Navy the last time this team made the tournament. The university hasn’t admittedly not always taken the program seriously. But it’s just more than that. Penn State basketball is John Harrar, Myles, Lamar.

— Neil Rudel (@NeilRudel) March 22, 2023
People will blame Kraft and maybe this is on him but if Kraft matched the offer he did what he could. The university is to blame for never sinking any money into the program. They want to hire and keep a good coach and recruit they need to upgrade badly! The BJC sucks
— Buoy Myers (@Rmyers_22) March 22, 2023
Utter failure by Kraft
— ConorD (@CONOR_____) March 22, 2023
Inevitable but what really sucks will be the mass exodus of the recruiting. Can see same situation when Coach Shrews came in. All that was built gone
— Sugarsanwhichs (@Sugarsandwhichs) March 22, 2023
I will say this, Penn State is not just losing Micah Shrewsberry. I would be surprised if more than a few players/recruits don’t follow him to Notre Dame.
