Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. came back for another year to improve his draft stock, and now is earning preseason accolades.
Porter has been named a third-team Preseason All-American by Phil Steele’s college football preview magazine.
The 6-foot-2, 196-pound cornerback was a All-Big Ten honorable mention last season. Porter started all 13 games in 2021 and recorded 51 tackles, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and one interception.
Porter is a big, physical corner who’s aggressive in press coverage and is one of the best at his position in the Big Ten at stopping the run. One thing that Porter needs to work on is his propensity to draw penalties. Porter can also work on forcing more turnovers.
Porter will have a lot of NFL scouts’ attention in 2022. Some 2023 NFL mock draft boards have him going in the mid-to-late first round. In Todd McShay’s first 2023 NFL mock draft, he has Porter going No. 25 overall to the Seattle Seahawks.
Porter is Mel Kiper Jr’s No. 6 corner in the 2023 draft.
Porter will have an opportunity to become an All-American-type player and solidify his stock as a sure-fire first-round pick in 2023 if he stays healthy and productive.
