EVANSTON, Ill. – It seems the extraordinary is becoming ordinary for freshman defensive back Josiah Zayas.
For the second consecutive week, Zayas was involved with a major impact play on defense.
In the second quarter on Northwestern’s with Penn State trailing 10-0, Wildcat running back Gavin Sawchuk fumbled the handoff exchange that Zayas was able to recover.
Zayas has been garnering national attention with his ability to make impact plays.
Last week Pro Football Focus (PFF) took note, recognizing Zayas as the highest-graded true freshman in Power 4 college football (93.1) during Week 4.
Against Wisconsin, Zayas intercepted Wisconsin quarterback Colton Joseph early in the second quarter and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown, the first of his career and Penn State’s first defensive score of the year.
Entering tonight, Zayas had seven tackles (5 solo), two tackles for loss, and the aforementioned interception.
Following Zayas’ fumble recovery, Penn State finally found some momentum taking advantage of the short field going five-plays for 34 yards with running back Carson Hansen capping the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit 10-7.
