Penn State Wrestling: Braeden Davis Won’t Repeat

Will Penn State wrestling starter Braeden Davis bounce back?

Penn State wrestling’s starting 133 pounder won’t win his second Big Ten championship.

No. 4 Braeden Davis was leading No. 5 Dylan Shawver (Rutgers) in the final seconds of their quarterfinal matchup.

But a late takedown put Shawver ahead 3-1, and that was enough to put him into the semifinals.

Davis still has a lot to wrestle for in Evanston, namely securing a spot in the NCAA Championships. But the loss to Shawver— whom he beat in the regular season— adds to what’s been a frustrating year for Davis.

Davis hurt his knee in Penn State’s first dual meet of the season, which took place Nov. 17 against Drexel.

More injury problems took place in late January, leading to Davis being out against Iowa, Michigan and Maryland. Davis returned to wrestle against Ohio State and Illinois in early February but didn’t go in the team’s regular-season finale against American Feb. 21.

The good news for Davis is that all he has to do to punch his NCAA Tournament ticket is win one more match.
