Penn State broke its own points record at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in grand style.
Carter Starocci’s fifth national championship – a 4-3 win over Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen – clinched the record that was set by last season’s Nittany Lions.
After the match, Starocci was quick to credit the coaching staff on all of his success at Penn State.
“This coaching staff, they’re just on another level,” Starocci told ESPN. “We have 10 All-Americans. The freshmen are ready to go. The seniors are still fresh. We’re the ones going out there, but the coaches…you just can’t put words on it.”
Penn State now has 173 points for the championships, beating last year’s total of 172.5. They still have two wrestlers competing for titles tonight in 165-pounder Mitchell Mesenbrink and 197-pounder Josh Barr.
