Penn State moved up in the US LBM Coaches Poll, so many felt the same would happen to its ranking in the AP Poll, and they weren’t wrong.
PSU moved from No. 4 to No. 3 in the Coaches Poll and made the same move in the AP.
The reason this comes as no surprise is that Ohio State, which had been ranked ahead of Penn State at No. 2, lost to Michigan in a stunning upset at home.
This allowed Penn State to move up on the rankings and, most importantly, move into the Big Ten Championship Game, where it will play Oregon Saturday, Dec. 7 at 8.

No. 1 Oregon remains at the top of the food chain, polishing off the only undefeated regular season in Division I with a win 49-21 demolition of rival Washington in Eugene Saturday night. Behind Oregon is No. 2 Texas, which punched its ticked to the SEC Championship Game with a 17-7 win at rival Texas A&M. Texas will play Georgia, and Oregon will play none other than Penn State.

If No. 3 Penn State beats No. 1 Oregon Saturday night, it’s AP Ranking will almost certainly be No. 1, a place it hasn’t been since 1997. Even with a loss to Oregon, it will most likely be in the College Football Playoff.
The College Football Playoff rankings will be announced Tuesday night at 7. We’ll know the entire field in less than two weeks.
