A lot can happen in four months, and that’s roughly the amount of time remaining before Penn State begins its season at West Virginia.
But per one sports book, Penn State’s currently a heavy favorite.
The first line for Penn State’s first game is set by DraftKings at -12.5 in favor of Penn State.
Considering the home team is given three points, the spread is even bigger than it looks. Although this Penn State team is capable of doing some damage with players such as Drew Allar, Nicholas Singleton on offense and Abdul Carter, Dani Dennis-Sutton and KJ Winston defensively, this spread feels a little steep.
West Virginia had a good season in 2023, finishing the year 9-4.
The team is returning a good chunk of its players from both sides of the ball, including starting quarterback Garrett Greene, who has been recognized as one of college football’s top returning QBs for 2024.
It’s also worth noting that the game’s set to be played in Morgantown, a place that historically has been known for being hostile at times and providing the Mountaineers with a significant home field advantage.
Penn State didn’t have much of a problem with West Virginia in 2023.
As will be the case this year, the teams met in the season opener.
It was Allar’s first college start and arguably his best game at Penn State to this point.
He ended the night 21-29 with 325 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Penn State and West Virginia are currently scheduled to play Saturday, Aug. 31. But there’s been talk of that game being moved to Thursday night, which could create some interesting scenes in Morgantown.
