It’s not normal for the NCAA Wrestling Championships to be decided from a team standpoint before the last day of the tournament but Penn State wrestling is not a normal program.
With multiple semifinal matches still remaining and all of Saturday still to go, Penn State is already officially your 2024 NCAA Wrestling Champion.
It’s the team’s third straight title and 11th in 13 years under the legendary scale Sanderson.
Eight of Penn State’s 10 starters have secured All-American status. Four of them— Beau Bartlett (141), Levi Haines (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) and Carter Starocci (174) have already secured their places in the national finals. Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (Heavyweight) are wrestling to secure their places later tonight.
With 11 titles, Sanderson is tied with Oklahoma State legend Ed Gallagher for the second most all time. He’s four behind Dan Gable, who ended his career at Iowa with 15.
