ESPN FPI Gives Penn State 11th Best Odds to Make CFP

Penn State will find out where it stands in the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday night.

Penn State has the 11th best odds at 10.7% to make the 2023 College Football Playoff, according to ESPN’s FPI system. The ten teams with better percentages are as follows: Ohio State (82.2%), Georgia (63.1%), Alabama (62.1%), Texas (34.2%), Michigan (25.9 %), USC (24.7%), Clemson (24.2%), LSU (23.7%), Notre Dame (15.8%) and Oklahoma (10.7%).

Interesting enough, PSU’s CFP chance at 10.7% is higher than their chance to win the Big Ten (4.6%) or even their division (6.3%). This suggests that if Penn State were to get in, they’d make it alongside another Big Ten East team such as Ohio State or Michigan.

ESPN’s FPI system currently has Penn State as the No. 10 team in the country, despite having the 11th best odds. The nine ahead of the Nittany Lions in order are Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Texas, Michigan, USC, Clemson and Notre Dame.

The FPI system projects a record around 9.3-2.7 for PSU though, likely with losses to Ohio State and Michigan who are both rated higher. The next highest rated team on Penn State’s schedule is Michigan State (31).
