Transfer Portal: Penn State has Reached out to 6-Foot-7 Guard

“Sweat With Us” has become the rallying cry of Penn State men’s basketball

Penn State basketball has reached out to a 6-foot-7 guard from the transfer portal.

Per Nittany Sports Now’s sister outlet, The Portal Report, PSU is among the programs that’s reached out to Brenden Wenzel, who’s in the transfer portal from Wyoming.

Other schools that have reached out include Boston College, Clemson, Houston, LMU, Longwood, McNease State, Minnesota, New Mexico, SMU, St. Mary’s,  TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Tulane, UAB, UNLV, Utah State, UTEP, VCU and Virginia Tech.

Wenzel averaged 11.6 points per game for Wyoming this past season. Before Wyoming, Wenzel played at Utah, redshirting the 2019-20 campaign. This was after Wenzel, a San Antonio native, had a successful career at O’Connor High School. As a senior, he averaged more than 24 points per game, and that helped him become a three-star recruit and top 20 prospect in Texas.

Penn State hasn’t received any commitments out of the transfer portal yet but did get some good news earlier this week. Puff Johnson, who, like Wenzel, is tall (6-foot-8) and capable of playing guard, announced that he’ll be returning to Penn State.

With the exception of 6-foot-10 big Qudus Wahab, all of Penn State’s starters from the end of the season have eligibility left. Penn State would be wise to fill Wahab’s void out of the transfer portal, and there’s a sign that it could be looking to do just that.

Grant Newell, who’s in the transfer portal from Cal, told Jamie Shaw of On3Sports that Penn State’s amongst the schools that have contacted him.

If Penn State can get somebody to replicate or exceed Wahab’s projection, that would bode well for Year 2 of the Rhoades era.
