Penn State Lacrosse Falls to Duke in Final 4

Garrett Leadmon scored in overtime to lift Duke past Penn State 16-15 in the national lacrosse semifinals at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

In the first quarter, Duke drew first blood when Dyson Williams scored a goal on Jack Fracyon. Two minutes later, Penn State tied the game when Ethan Long scored on William Helm. Duke took back the lead when Charles Balsamo scored a goal to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead. Penn State tied the game at two when TJ Malone scored on a delayed penalty on Duke.

Penn State capitalized on the power play when Jeb Brenfleck scored on a 106 miles per hour shot. Duke answered on a goal by Brennan O’Neill scored on a layup. Penn State retook the lead when Mac Costin scored a goal on Helm. Duke answered when O’Neill scored his second goal of the game on a fast break. Duke took the lead when Leadmon scored on a long-range shot. Duke scored again when Tommy Schelling scored on a goal assisted by O’Neill.

Duke led Penn State 6-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Duke increased his lead when Williams scored his second goal of the game off a rebound. Penn State got back on the board when Jack Traynor scored on a long-range shot. 43 seconds later Jack’s brother Matt scored to cut the lead to one. Duke answered when Leadmon scored his second goal of the game when he scored on a beautiful move. Duke increased its lead to 9-6 when O’Neill scored his third goal of the half. Penn State answered immediately on a fast break when Malone scored his second goal of the game.
Duke led Penn State 9-7 at halftime.

To start the third quarter, Duke got back on the board when Balsamo scored his second goal of the game to put Duke up 10-7. Penn State answered when TJ Malone scored his third goal of the game. Duke answered when Shelling scored his second goal of the game on a defensive breakdown from Penn State. Penn State answered back when Malone scored his fourth goal of the game. Penn State cut the deficit to one when Luke Mercer scored on a goal assisted by Malone. Duke answered back on a goal by Aidan Danenza. Penn State answered back with a goal by Matt Traynor scored his second goal of the game.

Duke answered four seconds later with a goal by Jake Naso off a fast break from a faceoff. Penn State cut the lead back to one when TJ Malone scored his fifth goal of the game toward the end of the third quarter.

Duke led 13-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Penn State tied the game when Jake Moran scored a goal assisted by Malone. Duke answered right back when Jaden Kerry scored his second goal of the season. Penn State tied the game again when Kevin Winkoff scored after a Duke goal was called off due to a crease violation by Williams. Duke regained the lead when Naso scored his second goal of the game with five minutes remaining. Penn State once again tied the game when Malone scored his sixth goal of the game on a wraparound goal.
Penn State and Duke were tied at 15 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, Leadmon scored a goal, but his foot was in the crease. However, it could not be reviewed in college lacrosse.
Duke will play the winner of Notre Dame-Virginia on Monday for the national championship.
