This Penn State season opener is among the most unique in the history of the program.
For only the third time since 1966, a new coach will be making his debut on opening day, and this time, it’s Matt Campbell’s turn.
Campbell is making his PSU debut nine months after coming over from Iowa State, and he’s expected to start 1-0.
Penn State is a heavy favorite over Marshall, a Sun Belt program which finished 5-7 last season.
This is the first time the teams have met since 1930, when legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno was only three years old.
Penn State won that game, 65-0.
The only other meeting Penn State has with Marshall took place the year before. That was a better result for Marshall, but PSU still won, 26-7. Hugo Bezdek was Penn State’s head coach in each of those games, with 1930 being his last season.
HOW’S THE WEATHER?
It’s supposed to be a beautiful day in State College, with temperatures between 78 and 76 degrees during Gametime. To paraphrase Blind Melon, no rain is expected, with wins between six and seven miles per hour. So the weather is expected to be smooth, and Penn State fans hope the product will be, too.
