Conor McGregor publicly backed Penn State hockey star Gavin McKenna after the forward paid homage to the UFC icon with McGregor’s trademark “Billionaire Strut” during a historic performance against Ohio State.
McKenna delivered a record-setting night, piling up eight points and seven assists are both new benchmarks for Penn State hockey, with the assist total also establishing a Big Ten single-game record. The celebration came after McKenna said he considered unveiling it during last week’s matchup against Michigan but saved it for the breakout performance versus the Buckeyes.
McGregor quickly noticed, firing off a series of enthusiastic posts on social media: “WHOS THE MAC? #MACENERGY,” “Hockey is BADASS!,” and “This kid is THE MAC!” The endorsement from one of combat sports’ biggest personalities amplified an already viral moment for the Nittany Lions standout.
The spotlight on McKenna has intensified in recent weeks. Earlier this month, he made headlines following an altercation outside a bar in which he struck an individual who had allegedly been verbally harassing his mother. Upon review of the footage of the altercations the felony charges were dropped.
Between his on-ice dominance and growing national attention, McKenna’s star continues to surge far beyond the college hockey world.
