Let’s put a scenario out there.
If you are an investor in stocks and play the “stock market game.”
You get a tip or from your own research you make an investment decision based on a projection that a certain company will have certain growth or the earnings potential is there to put money on.
Let’s say that the organization you invested in, all things begin to turn south and you lost a good bit of money.
Would you attempt to reach out to senior leaders in that organization and their family members, even going as far to send Venmo requests to them to attempt to get money back?
Odds are, you won’t and are probably laughing at my scenario, thinking I am off my rock and making things up.
With sports gambling becoming more prevalent in all sporting events, college athletes are some of the most vulnerable targets due to their age, financial status, and public profiles on social media where they are open targets.
The sad reality is, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar isn’t immune to those attacks and is one of many athletes who get threats and communications on social media.
Allar opened up about it at Big Ten Media Days about his experiences with these individuals.
“That was the one thing that has always caught me off guard,” Allar said. “I didn’t expect that part as the starting quarterback in college. I’ll go back home and people will be like, ‘Oh yeah, I got like, 1000 Newton with a high school I’m like, okay, like, why do I need to know that? Like, I don’t necessarily need to know that. That side of things can kind of bring out some ugly interactions.”
Allar identified some of the ugly interactions he and others close to him have had to endure.
“I’ve had people request money from me and all that sort of stuff, phone number, so it’s not just me…it’ll affect my family, my girlfriend, all my friends, they’ll go after them, which is kind of the weird part..it doesn’t, necessarily, make it to me, but they’ll kind of go after people that are around me so that that it’s definitely weird having those interactions,” he said. “I try to handle it as best as I can.”

With the expectations great for Penn State heading into the 2025 season, Allar had some advice for the bettors out there and how it may be hard for them to reach him during the season.
“I mean, that’s their choice to make those decisions, whether they put money on us or not… it’s kind of on them,” he said. “It’s weird to kind of say that, it’s definitely just weird with those sorts of things, just because sometimes there’s no good way to handle it, and it just becomes really awkward, just trying to handle those things as gracefully as I can. I’ll be off social media during the season, so trying to at least limit the amount of distractions that I can have.”
