Penn State Football Reveals Uniform Choice for SMU Game

Nittany Sports Now can confirm what uniforms Penn State will be wearing for Saturday’s College Football Playoff Game against SMU.

The program hinted through social media that it would be wearing its Generations of Greatness uniforms, and NSN confirmed that this is indeed the case.

So instead of the traditional plain white helmets with no numbers, Penn State’s helmets for SMU will have numbers on the side.

Instead of the traditional blue face masks, Penn State’s face masks will be gray. Usually, Penn State reserves these uniforms for Homecoming, which took place Sept. 28 against Illinois. But the expanded Playoff field makes things different.

A SOLID TRACK RECORD

Penn State has been pretty good when wearing its Generations of Greatness uniforms. The jerseys debuted in 2017 and the team pounded Indiana 45-14. It also has wins in 2019 (Purdue), 2022 (Minnesota), 2023 (UMass) and 2024 (Illinois) when wearing them. But the unis haven’t always brought Penn State good luck.

Two of the worst losses of the James Franklin era took place in Generations of Greatness games: 2018 against Michigan State and 2021 against Illinois (it took nine overtimes to decide that one for those who don’t know). Each of those losses knocked Penn State out of College Football Playoff contention, back when the field only had four teams. Now, it has 12, and Penn State is in.

OTHER CFP INFORMATION

Penn State will find out where it stands in the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday night.

Besides a pregame hype video for visiting SMU, everything else will pretty much run as normal, with a few small differences.

Per the Playoff:

  • “Penn State’s team entrance will be accompanied by the Penn State intro video and 360-degree fireworks
  • “All in-stadium music and sound effects will be controlled by Penn State.”
  • “All normal fan engagements & Beaver Stadium traditions will remain the same from the time parking lots open through the final whistle.”

Here are the minor differences:

  • “No sponsorship advertisements are permitted to run on the video boards or ribbon boards at any point.”
  • “Select College Football Playoff videos are required to run on the video boards.”
  • “The SMU band will be seated in the north upper deck & will only play during halftime.”

Penn State-SMU is scheduled to kick off at noon on TNT and HBO Max.
