This doesn’t come as a surprise given recent history. Penn State’s last six White Out games have kicked off under the lights.
It’s also not a surprise because a big reason Minnesota became Penn State’s White Out opponent was because of the school and its fans wanting the annual spectacle to be under the lights.
“We did a very simple poll of our fans on social media,” Penn State coach James Franklin told reporters during Big Ten Media Days this past July, “and we mixed it in there with ‘what’s your favorite thing, the hamburger or hot dog?’ “We set it up to act like we cared whether it was a hot dog or not, but we were setting it up to get to the White Out question.”
“The data said that most people want a night game. When we looked at our schedule, another game seemed more probable that it was going to be a 12 o’clock game. So that impacted the decision, and when (athletic director) Pat (Kraft) came in, I asked him and he thought the same thing.”
Penn State is 9-8 lifetime in White Out games, with the first full-stadium White Out taking place in 2007 against Notre Dame. Penn State’s most recent White Out game took place last September in Auburn. Penn State won both those games and will likely be favored to beat Minnesota.
