As he does every Tuesday during the season, Penn State coach Matt Campbell updated the status of injured players.
He mentioned four players in total, with two of them being talked about after the Buffalo game Saturday and two of them being new names on the report.
One name in particular had been a big topic amongst Penn State fans in the 12+ hours leading into Tuesday.
KOBY HOWARD
The Penn State Twitter world talked a lot about the star receiver Monday night.
Everybody has “sources,” of course.
Some sources said he was fine.
Others said he got hurt during football-related activities. Others still said he got hurt away from the field.
Campbell set the record straight Tuesday.
“Koby Howard got dinged up on that long touchdown run. And you know, I think right now we probably don’t know exactly where he’ll be by the end of the week. Probably have a better idea. Kind of went through a couple things yesterday, and just trying to gauge exactly where he is as we kind of get ourselves ready for the end of the week.”
Howard has been one of the best receivers in the country through three games, eclipsing 100 in two of them. So, yeah, he’s a guy Penn State would like to have out there.
BROCK RIKER
Penn State’s center left the Buffalo game early, but Campbell’s words afterward indicated that Riker would be ok going forward.
Now, there seems to be little doubt that Riker will be available come Saturday.
“Brock, I think, is in a really good spot,” Campbell said. Practiced, I think, what we did Saturday really helped probably him be ready to be full go today in practice.”
ANDREW RAPPLEYEA
Like Riker, Rappleyea left Saturday’s game in the first half with an injury, and his status for Saturday seems less certain.
“I think Rap’s still limited right now,” Campbell said, “probably a little bit of a question mark. I would still say questionable going into this week right now. Was out at practice. We’ll kind of see where he’s at.”
Rappleyea has evolved into one of college football’s better blocking tight ends, and caught his first touchdown of the season against Buffalo, so he’s another big part of the PSU offense.
TYLER ARMSTEAD
Armstead got a surprise start Saturday, and earned that through his play on the practice field.
Campbell said the DB who came to Penn State as a walk-on “got dinged up” against Buffalo.
“He’s played a lot and played really good football for us on special teams,” Campbell said, “and I think he’s in that same boat, questionable right now as we kind of head into the rest of the week.
