Penn State wrestling competed in its past two dual meets without Braeden Davis starting at 133, and coach Cael Sanderson was asked about Davis’ status after Friday’s 39-0 win over Michigan.

As expected, Sanderson didn’t confirm whether Davis would be available for Sunday’s dual meet against Maryland at Rec Hall.

Although Penn State can certainly hold its own without Davis— it beat No. 2 Iowa 30-8 last Friday night before demolishing Michigan this Friday night— Sanderson and company would certainly welcome having him back in the lineup.

Davis is 7-2 on the season and ranked No. 7 in the 133-pound weight class.

Here’s what Cael said about Davis’ status.

“I don’t actually know the answer to that. That’ll be a Sunday or tomorrow (Saturday) night, kind of evening decision.”

A QUALITY REPLACEMENT

Although Penn State would love to have Davis back as soon as possible, his replacement didn’t do half bad against Michigan.

Kyison Garcia, a redshirt freshman, came into Friday night 6-3 on his career, with all bouts being in tournaments last season.

With Davis out, Garcia got the call to compete in a dual meet and he answered it.

Garcia got an escape and a takedown to go ahead 4-0 and ended up getting a 4-1 win over Michigan’s Nolan Wertanen. Weartanen has been filing in for Dylan Ragusion, who is out for the season with a knee injury.

It was a huge moment for Garcia, who made a big contribution on a big night for Penn State wrestling.

Penn State-Maryland is scheduled for Sunday at 1 on BTN+ from Rec Hall.
