What Else is New?: Penn State Wrestling Shuts Out Michigan, Runs Streak to 65

In what came as a surprise to absolutely nobody, Penn State wrestling pounded Michigan at the Bryce Jordan Center Friday night.

Penn State got a pin to start the night and just kept winning from there.

The stars, such as Beau Bartlett, Shayne Van Ness and Mitchell Mesenbrink, all got wins, and a reserve named Kyison Garcia got his first dual meet win at 133, filling in for Braeden Davis.

Penn State has now won 65 consecutive bouts dating back more than five seasons. It’s also swept the state of Michigan, following a 55-0 win over Michigan State last month.

Here’s how the dual meet went down.

125: No. 7 Luke Lilledahl (Penn State) pins Michigan’s Christian Tanefeu

Penn State 6, Michigan 0

133: Kyison Garcia (Penn State) 4-1 Dec. over Michigan’s Nolan Weartanen

Penn State 9, Michigan 0

141: No. 3 Beau Bartlett (Penn State) 3-2 Dec. over No. 12 Sergio Lemley (Michigan)

Penn State 12, Michigan 0

The bout ended 2-2 but Bartlett got an extra point for having riding time secured

149: No. 3 Shayne Van Ness (Penn State) 7-1 Dec. over No. 24 Dylan Gilcher (Michigan)

Penn State 15, Michigan 0

157: No. 1 Tyler Kasak (Penn State) 7-2 DEC over Michigan’s Zack Mattin

Kasak again needed blood time, although this result wasn’t as iconic as last Friday night’s win over Iowa’s Jaroci Temmer, who was then ranked No. 1.

165: No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink (Penn State) 18-4 Major over No. 10 Beau Mantanona

Penn State 22, Michigan 0

This ended  Mesenbrink’s streak of 15 bouts that didn’t go the distance (13 tech falls, two forfeits)

174: No. 2 Levi Haines (Penn State) first period pin over No. 29 Joseph Walker (Michigan)

Penn State 28, Michigan 0

184: No. 1 Carter Starocci (Penn State) tech fall over No. 24 Jaden Bullock (Michigan) 19-4

Penn State 33, Michigan 0

197: No. 4 Josh Barr (Penn State) beats No. 2 Jacob Cardenas (Michigan) 3-2 in the first tiebreaker

This was probably the match of the night

Penn State 36, Michigan 0

Heavyweight: No. 2 Greg Kerkvliet (Penn State) over Josh Heindselman (Michigan)

Penn State 39, Michigan 0
