It feels like Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have been at Penn State forever.
That’s because, while most of their classmates were cutting their teeth on the scout team in Year 1, Singleton and Allen contributed almost right away.
Singleton (1,061 yards, 12 touchdowns, 6.8 yards per carry) and Allen (867 yards, 10 touchdowns, 5.2 yards per carry), became one of the best RB duos in the country as true freshmen.
Two years later, not much has changed.
During Penn State RB coach Ja’Juan Seider’s interview with reporters via Zoom early Thursday afternoon, he was asked to reflect on what he saw from the two as true freshmen.
Seider, always quotable, gave a 181 word response.
“I said this way back,” he said, “that those two kids when they got here in January when we got into spring ball, made our team at Penn State a better team.” We became a physical team the day we put on pads in spring ball.”
How did this happen?
“Because the way they practice, the way they run… they made our defense tougher because now I have to tackle these dudes every day,” he said.
Seider loves that the bring the same energy on Holuba Hall’s practice field that they do in Beaver Stadium.
“The thing that’s fun is they practice the way they play,” he said. “They don’t take short cuts. They’re pissed off if we’re in practice and they’re not touching the ball. I’ve never been around kids that… like an old school mentality where you love football so much, you don’t want to miss anything. And that’s the thing that makes it special. When you have great players but they practice to be great. They don’t take short cuts, and its unique in this situation that we’re in, especially when you have two of these kids that are equally talented and can be anywhere in the country and be the focal point of any offense.”
