Penn State All 105: Speedy Elliot Washington Looks to Take Next Step in Year II

Photo by Matt Lynch, Nittany Sports Now: Elliot Washington

The Penn State secondary is in transition, and second-year CB Elliot Washington could be a big part of that.

Most freshman at Penn State redshirt their first seasons.

Not Washington.

Penn State played 13 games in 2023 and Washington appeared in 10 of them.

Now, Penn State’s top three corners— Kalen King, Johnny Dixon and Daequan Hardy— are gone, and Penn State will need new people to step up. Some candidates are from the transfer portal— AJ Harris (Georgia) and Jalen Kimber (Florida) both came to Happy Valley over the winter. Others are returners from last season, such as Cam Miller, Zion Tracy and Washington.

Washington is the subject in the latest edition of All 105, a Nittany Sports Now series profiling each Penn State football player.

Height: 5-foot-11

Weight: 193 pounds

Hometown: Venice, Florida

Before Penn State: Washington was one of Penn State’s biggest recruiting wins of the 2023 cycle. He has been committed to Alabama since January, then flipped to Happy Valley in July after going on an official visit to Penn State the previous month. Washington, a four-star recruit, had a decorated career at Venice High School. He helped his team to two regional titles, two state title game appearances and the 2021 state championship.

Last year: Washington was one of Penn State’s more active true freshman. Per Pro Football Focus, Washington played 63 snaps, which were fourth among Penn State’s 10 defensive signees.

Where he stands: It’s not likely that Washington will start for Penn State in 2024. Harris seems to be the favorite for one of the corner spots, and the other will be a battle between Kimber, Miller and Tracy— the latter two started in Penn State’s Peach Bowl against Ole Miss. With that said, Penn State doesn’t have a much experience in its corner room, so there’s no reason why Washington can’t get a good chunk of playing time. It also doesn’t hurt that he was a safety in high school, so he has versatility as well.

A quote by Washington: “I’m ready to get back on the field. I’m ready. This really is just a dream come true. I’m ready to compete with everybody in the room. Nobody’s average. Everyone is great.” — Tracy during Penn State’s second-year player media availability this past Friday, via Seth Engle of the Daily Collegian.

A quote about Washington: “Elliot is arguably our fastest player on the entire roster. I say that arguably because he’s run 4.32 [in the 40], and we got a couple guys — DaeDae ran 4.32, we got couple guys right there — but he ran the fastest GPS time. He’s run over 24 miles per hour, which is the fastest in our program history. He can flat out run.” — CB Coach Terry Smith to reporters via Zoom last September.
