What do the odds say about Penn State and West Virginia?

Well, Penn State finished 11-2 and won the Rose Bowl last season.

West Virginia finished 5-7 and didn’t make a bowl game.

The two teams have each other as their first opponent for 2023. The early spread reflects the difference in the two programs right now.

With Week 1 still well over two months away, Penn State is a 20-point favorite over West Virginia according to CircaSports.

The game’s is scheduled for Sept. 2 at Beaver Stadium. It’s slated to be a 7:30 kick on NBC. Penn State fans will ring in the new season (a.k.a a “107k family reunion) with the school’s second-ever Helmet Stripe Game.

West Virginia and Penn State are set to play for the first time since 1992. It’s the only power-five non-conference game for Penn State this season.

Penn State has dominated the series since its inception. The all-time record is 48-9-2. Penn State’s won the last four meetings between the two of them. The team is 34-2-1 since 1956 with both of those losses occurring in Morgantown.

The first of the two-game renewed series will be in State College with next year’s game in Morgantown. West Virginia hasn’t won in State College since 1954, more than a decade before NCAA all-time winningest head coach Joe Paterno took over for Penn State.

This year, early odds are in favor of Penn State with them being considered one of the top teams in the country.

Sept. 2 is also expect to feature the debut of Drew Allar as Penn State’s starting quarterback. Although coach James Franklin hasn’t announced it, the former five-star from Medina, Ohio, is expected to take over for Sean Clifford as the team’s starter.
