On Wednesday, Kansas City transfer RayQuawndis Mitchell committed to Penn State over Arkansas, Oklahoma State, and BYU.
“I decided that I’m going to Penn State University,” Mitchell told Nittany Sports Now. “I felt like coming into UMKC, finding a family was huge for me. Talking with coach Rhoades and the rest of the staff at Penn State, it seemed like I had known them for a while, the more and more our conversation went on. It just seemed like it’s a very oriented team over there. That’s just something I want to be a part of. I’m just excited to get over there and get to work.”
Mitchell entered the portal on May 1 after starring for Kansas City this season, and has already made up his mind regarding his next stop. The 6-foot-5 graduate transfer guard scored 17.3 points per game and hit 82 three pointers last season for the ‘Roos, establishing himself as one of the top players in the Summit League (Second Team All-Conference).
“As of right now I’m going into the back court with Ace [Baldwin],” Mitchell said about his role with the Nittany Lions. “They’ve got me playing the combo. Some two and some one as well.”
Mitchell began his career at Idaho, playing there for one season and averaging 4.4 points per game. He then transferred to UIC, sitting out his first year and averaging 8.3 points per game in his second. Then, this past season, he played for Kansas City, exploding for career highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and three pointers per game as a senior.
“I’m really excited to come in there and bring my flavor to the game and impact winning at the highest stage. I want to keep the tradition going there. They’ve got a huge tradition going with Coach Rhoades coming in from VCU and the tradition already at Penn State, and I just want to keep that going.”
He now commits to Mike Rhoades’ first PSU squad that includes transfers Ace Baldwin (VCU), Puff Johnson (North Carolina), Qudus Wahab (Georgetown), Zach Hicks (Temple), Nick Kern (VCU), and Leo O’Boyle (Lafayette).
