The Orange Bowl will pit an ACC team against a school from either the Big Ten or SEC. ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have Penn State playing Wake Forest. CBS’ Jerry Palm and USA Today’s Erick Smith have it facing NC State.
No. 10 Penn State is currently 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. The team is currently on its bye week, and its first three games coming out of the bye will go a long way in determining what bowl game the Nittany Lions play in after the regular season.
Penn State is at No. 4 Michigan Oct. 15, then hosts Minnesota the next week in the school’s annual White Out game. The three-game gauntlet concluded Oct. 29 when the team has a showdown with Ohio State, who is currently ranked No. 3, at Beaver Stadium.
The last time Penn State played in the Orange Bowl was Jan. 3, 2006. Penn State concluded a season that resurrected the program from the ashes of four losing seasons in five years with a 26-23 triple-overtime win over Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Penn State ended the year 11-1 and ranked No. 3 in the country.
Penn State is 4-1 lifetime in the Orange Bowl, with its lone watch coming against Oklahoma on New Year’s Day, 1986. Penn State came into that game ranked No. 1, and fell to the No. 2 Sooners, 25-10.
Oklahoma ended up being named national champion.
