On Monday, The Arizona Cardinals promoted former standout Jessie Luketa to the active roster. They made room by cutting safety Deionte Thompson.
According to Aaron Wilson of NFL of Pro Football Network, the Baltimore Ravens were interested in singing Luketa off their practice squad to their active roster. Luketa’s interest around the league prompted the Cardinals to make the moves needed to keep Luketa.
Luketa is a 6-foot-3, 247-pound linebacker, who is from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada was a two-time team captain at Penn State. After playing mainly on special teams in his first two seasons, he emerged as a leader on Penn State’s defense in 2020 with 59 tackles starting nine games. Last season, he recorded 64 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and an interception earning him a Third-team All-Big Ten selection.
He was drafted by the Cardinals in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft selected with the No. 256 pick overall. He was also drafted to the Canadian Football League in the second round with the No. 20 selection by the Ottawa Redblacks.
He went through the Cardinals’ off-season team activities and training camp, just missing out on the initial 53-man roster. The Cardinals claimed him on their practice squad, and three weeks into the season, he now will hopefully get game action.
