On Monday, Penn State Class of 2023 commit, Alex Birchmeier from Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia, was named a second-team preseason All-American by MaxPreps.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Birchmeier, who committed to Penn State last July over Notre Dame and Virginia Tech, is the number one interior offensive lineman, the number one recruit in Virginia, and the No. 22 player in the nation according to 247Sports.
Birchmeier is the only Penn State commit selected to an All-America team by MaxPreps. Not only is he the highest-rated Penn State commit in the 2023 recruiting cycle, but he has been the leader of the recruiting class trying to get other recruits to join the program.
Birchmeier is also an elite wrestler who won the Virginia 4A state championships the past four years. Unfortunately, he will not be allowed to go for a three-peat because he will be enrolling early at Penn State.
Scouts like that Birchmeier has a nasty streak and plays physical at the point of attack. He plays with athleticism consistently get to the second level in the running game with pull and trap blocks. In pass protection, he shows good initial punch getting leverage on pass rushers, and his wrestling background allows him to have great body control for a kid his size.
