Penn State Opponents: Rutgers Laid an Egg. To Say the Least

Penn State was never going to be home underdogs against Rutgers this season.

That would have been true had Rutgers not lost to a UMass team that went 0-12 last year by 16 at home, and, yeah, it’s definitley true now.

Rutgers, who came in as 29.5-point favorites over UMass, hasn’t beaten Penn State since joining the Big 10 in 2014, and didn’t do so well before than, either.

Of the 35 matchups between the two teams, Penn State has won 33. The most recent Rutgers win came in 1988, when Rutgers beat a Penn State squad that finished 5-6 21-16 in Happy Valley. Rutgers’ other triumph came in 1918, two days before World War I. Plenty of Rutgers teams that would have beat UMass at home have fell to Penn State, and although a lot can change between now and November, it’s hard for anybody to believe right now that this Rutgers team will be the one that cracks the code.
