Penn State Basketball: The ‘Cathedral of College Basketball’ To Host Saturday

On Saturday, Jan. 3, Penn State men’s basketball will take on No. 20 Illinois at the legendary Palestra in Philadelphia.

This White Out game will mark the 64th time, dating back to 1927, that Penn State has played in the “Cathedral of College Basketball”.

Illinois enters Saturday’s action with a 10-3 overall record. They are 1-1 in Big Ten play with a win at Ohio State and a loss to Nebraska.

Led by ninth-year coach Brad Underwood, Illinois has five players averaging double-digits in points.

Keaton Wagler is a 6′-6″ freshman guard averaging 15.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. His is followed by 6′-7″ junior guard, Andrej Stojakovic, who is tallying 15.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Kylan Boswell is a 6′-2″ senior guard averaging 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Followed by 6′-9″ freshman forward, David Mirkovic, who is tallying 13.3 points and grabbing 8.5 rebounds per game and 7′-1″ junior center, Tomislav Ivisic, comes in at 10.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Penn State enters “The Cathedral of College Basketball” with an overall record of 9-4 and is searching for its first Big Ten win.

Freshman Kayden Mingo has remained hot averaging 14.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Freddie Dilione V. follows with 14.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game and freshman, Melih Tunca, is registering 11.0 points and is dishing out 3.1 assists per game.

The historic Palestra, home to the University of Pennsylvania, has hosted more games, more visiting teams and more NCAA tournaments than any other facility in college basketball. Legendary Rec Hall, the longtime home arena to the Nittany Lions, was designed by the same architect who designed The Palestra, Charles Klauder.
