Penn State Basketball: The Nittany Lions Settle The Pioneers

Tonight, the Penn State men’s basketball team improved to (7-1) as they defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 90-59.

The game started out with both teams trying to get their rhythm, but both teams started to find their stride. The Pioneers connected on three three-point shots to make the score 9-8 Pioneers with (14:01) left in the first half. Penn State’s Kayden Mingo, Melih Tunca and Sasa Ciana each had two points apiece.

Eli Rice, off the bench, drilled a three-pointer at the (13:12) mark to give the Nittany Lions the lead, 12-9

Ivan Juric had an offensive rebound and a putback and Mingo had a steal and transition lay-up at the first media timeout to make the score Penn State 16, Sacred Heart 9.

At the second media timeout (6:29) the Pioneers were only shooting 31.6% from the field, while the Nittany Lions were shooting 50.0% from the field. Mingo and Juric were leading the way with 6 points apiece to make the score 25-15 in favor of PSU.

Freddie Dilione V converted with a smooth drive to the hoop and Dominick Stewart connected from deep to increase Penn State’s lead by 15 (30-15) with (5:30) to play in the half.

Sacred Heart’s, Abdou Yadd, responded with a three of his own to make the score Nittany Lions 32, Pioneers 18 with (3:37) left to play.

The Nittany Lions were wearing the Pioneers down with their depth. Eli Rice came off the bench again and banged in a three to make the score 41-18 in favor of PSU. Tunca then responded with one of his own from deep.

At halftime, Penn State led Sacred Heart, 47-20.

At the first media timeout in the second half (15:47), it was the Nittany Lions 54, Pioneers 30. Mingo and Juric each had a team-high 10 points. Anquan Hill had seven points for the Pioneers.

Penn State did not let up. Their size and depth were overwhelming Sacred Heart. The balanced scoring attack was coming into shape. At the second media timeout (11:14), it was Penn State 67, Sacred Heart 33. Juric had 12 points, Tunca and Rice each had 11 and Mingo with 10.

At the (7:04) minute mark, the Nittany Lions were shooting 56.0% from the field to the Pioneers’ 34.1%. Penn State was asserting their will over Sacred Heart and well on their way to their seventh victory of the season.

With (4:38) left to play in the game, it was Penn State 81, Sacred Heart 47.

FINAL: Penn State 90, Sacred Heart 59.
