So far in this young 2025-2026 season, the (6-1) Penn State men’s basketball team has earned national recognition in several categories.
First, there was the individual recognition for freshman, standout star, Kayden Mingo. The 6′-3″ point guard was recognized as being an ESPN Top 50 Newcomer to their team. A player, portal transfers included, who will have the greatest impact to their team this year, and this accolade has rung true so far this season.
Second, the Nittany Lions rank No. 1 in the country for the fewest turnovers per game (7.1). This is big time recognition as this statistic shows the discipline, talent, teamwork, and mental toughness this young squad exemplifies.
Third, Penn State’s bench has outscored opponents by a 236-97 margin. They are averaging 33.7 bench points per game. This ranks the Nittany Lions third in the Big Ten and is a Top-50 mark in the nation. This is, once again, a huge accomplishment, because this statistic shows the great depth this team has this year. The depth and scoring from their bench is already and will continue to wear out opponents as the grind of the game goes on and player injuries will inevitably happen.
Fourth, the Nittany Lions rank No. 7 in the country for the fewest fouls per game at (13.1). This shows the discipline this team has and how fundamentally-sound they are as a collective.
Fifth, Penn State ranks No. 9 in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio. Penn State has a value of 2.04, which means this statistic measures a team’s efficiency in creating scoring opportunities versus the number of mistakes they make. In Layman’s terms, the team is playing solid, disciplined, team basketball and is not sloppy with the ball.
Sixth, the Nittany Lions are just one of three schools in America to have two freshmen both averaging 14 or more points per game through games played on November 25. Kayden Mingo is averaging (14.4 ppg.) and Melih Tunca is averaging (14.1 ppg.). The other two schools with freshmen, dynamic duos are Illinois and Arkansas.
