NSN’s Joe Smeltzer and Kyle Golik recently chatted with a guy who knows James Franklin better than most in media.

If you’re a Penn State fan, you probably know about Ben Jones.

From 2011 through the 2023 season, Jones covered Penn State full-time for StateCollege.com.

Franklin became the coach in 2014, staying there until his firing earlier this month. Over that time, he and Jones developed a rapport, leading to some entertaining press conference moments.

“Joe and the Fatman” chanted with Jones about how he built that relationship, his thoughts on what might be next for Franklin and who Penn State might get to replace him.

Jones is still writing about Penn State as a columnist for Sports Illustrated and covers Penn State on Substack.

It’s all right here on Joe and the Fatman.
