AP Poll: Where Did Penn State Land?

The first in-season AP Poll of 2025 is out, and Penn State remains ranked quite highly.

As a matter of fact, there’s no change to Penn State’s ranking at all.

Penn State came into the season ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll behind Texas.

Although Texas lost Week 1, the team it lost to was Ohio State, which started the season right behind Penn State at No. 3. Therefore, Ohio State is the new No. 1, and Penn State stays just where it was at No. 2.

Naturally, Penn State fans won’t like seeing a rival as the No. 1 team in the land. But there are some benefits to that.

A POTENTIAL ‘GAME OF THE CENTURY’

Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. and Penn State’s Kalen King represent two of the Big Ten’s highest draft prospects.

The positive to Ohio State being ranked No. 1 is that a “game of the century” could be looming.

On Jan. 2, 1987, No. 2 Penn State beat No. 1 Miami to win its second and most recent national championship. Since then, Penn State hasn’t been part of a 1 vs. 2 matchup.

If all goes according to plan— Penn State beating No. 6 Oregon Sept. 27, surviving Iowa at Kinnick Stadium Oct. 18 and winning its other five games, and Ohio State fending off No. 12 Illinois on the road and winning its other five— Ohio State-Penn State will be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup.

If Oregon goes up to No. 5 in few more weeks, Penn State football’s White Out clash with Oregon will be a top five matchup.

This has never happened before in the history of White Out games, which date back to 2005.

No. 2 Penn State takes on FIU Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on the Big Ten Network.

There are 12 teams that make it to the College Football Playoff. The five highest-ranked conference champions will receive automatic bids, with the remaining seven being at-large teams.

Here’s what the top 12 look like as of now, bearing in mind that not every conference champ will be in the top 12.
