Head to the ballot boxes, get out your best No. 2 pencil, and get ready to fill out the rest on college football.

On August 4, USA Today released its first US LBM Coaches Poll of the 2025 season.

Penn State did not land the No. 1 spot, unlike where FOX analyst Joe Klatt slotted the Nittany Lions on his top 25 list.

The coaches ranked Penn State as the No. 3 team in college football behind the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Texas lost to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl this season and proceeded to lose to Notre Dame in the final after the Irish stormed back to defeat PSU.

Georgia and Notre Dame round out the top five. Nine SEC teams made the list, the most of any conference.

Penn State finished No. 5 in the final AP Poll of the 2024 following a 13-3 campaign. The Nittany Lions won two games in their first appearance in the College Football Playoffs.

James Franklin’s program defeated SMU at home in the first round and Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve to advance to the CFP semifinals.

The program finished No. 5 in the final Coaches Poll rankings last season following Ohio State’s win.

Six Big Ten teams made the top 25, including all four playoff teams from the first 12-team playoff. Oregon makes the top 10 at No. 7, while Indiana ranks No. 19 as the lowest-ranked conference team.

Illinois (No. 12) looks to take the next step and Michigan (No. 14) eyes a bounce-back season following an 8-5 record, but beating Ohio State in Columbus.

Penn State looks to take the final step and get back to the playoffs with significant expectations and a national championship on their minds.

The Nittany Lions begin the 2025 season hosting Nevada on August 30 at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.
